What’s UP – Summer 2021

What’s UP…  Summer is here!

COVID update…

Government funding to support our operations at the hotel is confirmed until the end of September, where we continue to support individuals at greatest risk during the pandemic.

Unity Project’s Frontline Support Team work incredibly hard and do an amazing job! We currently support 47 individuals in 40 rooms, along with 11 dogs and 9 cats. Since March 2020, 182 unique individuals have been supported in the hotel, including helping 51 individuals to obtain housing.

London Homeless Prevention Network continues to meet monthly in the ongoing process to develop our city’s homeless prevention system. Unity Project is significantly invested in this process and we continue to work to inform and enact better practice for the ongoing relief of homelessness and our role within a robust homeless prevention system.

Another public health crisis…

During this time, people experiencing homelessness are isolated in ways that further put their lives at risk. Overdose deaths have increased exponentially including from opioids as well as stimulants, and the numbers are staggering. In London, 101 individuals have tragically lost their lives. The loss and the grief weighs on participants and frontline workers daily.

The pandemic has taught us that we know how to respond if it is something we prioritize.

We will continue to have gaps despite advances in good programming, as long as we continue to see substance use as a moral or ethical issue. We need to see it as a health issue and address it in a comprehensive way, which means making options available to people as there is no one thing that works for everyone who may be struggling with the substances they use. The development of an overdose prevention site, and system for the safer supply of prescription drugs certainly help during this time, but it is still not broad enough and not enough resources are dedicated to ensure safe supply so that the toxicity of street drugs is not killing people. We know how to do this: We regulate two of the most damaging drugs – alcohol and nicotine – allowing people to use these substances of choice in a safer way.

We need to prioritize this tragedy and respond to it like the health crisis that it is.

Update – Shelley Niro – Thinking of You

Thinking Of You enacts a site of mourning and calls for justice as we continue to learn about Canada’s Indian Residential School System and the impact of genocide on Indigenous peoples and communities as settler colonialism continues to unfold in Canada. Presented outdoors, on screens facing the Deshkan Ziibi/Thames River at the Centre at the Forks, Museum London, these images reference the Medicine Wheel teachings, the interconnectivity between all things—a source of healing, of medicine that is both spiritual and physical. The exhibition has gathered new meaning after the remains of 215 Indigenous children were found in a mass grave at the Kamloops Residential School in British Columbia.

This exhibition will be screened in August between sunset and sunrise.

In constellation with this exhibit, a window display at SATELLiTE Project Space 151 Dundas features Shelley Niro’s poem “HOME” and her T-Shirt “The Wild Ones And The Colonized”. Originally sold (in white) during UPwithART 2021, this new limited-edition T-Shirt in black can be yours for $50 with proceeds benefitting Unity Project and Museum London.

Sample Letter to Elected Officials

Call to action: sample letter

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed system gaps and failures. It also mobilized a system response and my appetite for real change. I know that I am not alone. We are all in this together!

I am grateful for the progress that my community has made thus far in protecting homeless individuals.

But London is still in a housing and homelessness crisis and this, in itself, is a public health crisis that demands action. It is a crisis that will grow during this time if we don’t do something about it.

That the $2000 Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) income for people struggling during the pandemic was more than double the social assistance rates for people struggling before the pandemic, really demonstrates that we punish people for being poor. The CERB should be instated as a permanent policy of basic income that provides every Canadian a foundation for stability.

It’s time that we recognize the unique mental and physical health challenges that disproportionately affect people experiencing homelessness and poverty. We need to treat substance use as a health issue ensuring people have access to safe supply and an adequate system of treatment options.

It’s time that we put policy in place that ensures housing as a human right instead of the commodity it is today. Safe, affordable, and adequate housing is the foundation to any person’s ability to be to successful and should be guaranteed for everyone.

Housing, with supports, is the solution to homelessness and income the solution to poverty.

As my elected representative, I beg you to rise from your seat and raise our collective voice in support of humane public policy.

Sincerely,

YOUR NAME and ADDRESS here

What is the solution to homelessness and poverty?

What is the solution to homelessness and poverty?

Written by Chuck Lazenby, our Executive Director

What is the solution to homelessness and poverty? I have been asked this question countless times since the origins of Unity Project as a tent city protest in 2001. My answer has not changed in two decades: Housing is the solution to homelessness. Income is the solution to poverty.

Collectively, we have known the solution for years:

  1. Increase minimum wage and social assistance rates and ultimately we need a basic/minimum income (by the way, we could and should do that tomorrow, easy!), and;

  2. Create truly affordable, quality housing whether through de-commodification of housing, rent controls, refurb/retrofit/maintenance, or new public housing builds (by the way, creating jobs in the process).

Income and housing are the foundation from which we begin to support individuals as part of the community. People must be supported in their physical, mental and social well-being to maintain stability and achieve belonging, both as recovery from the trauma of homelessness and prevention against a constant cycle of new people.

It is not complicated. It serves the collective good. Yup, we are all in this together. Yet, collectively, we cannot coalesce around sound, actionable public policy. We tear our hair out coming up with new charity programming, but skirt around the real and obvious solutions. Why? Because collectively, we cannot shake ourselves free of the myth of our economic system; that homelessness and poverty is a personal crisis which belongs to the individual. This is a stigma. It is a falsehood. It blinds us to the systemic issue and results in our collective acceptance (and yes, the benefits to some) of inhumane public policy.

This is not a failure of government. The system is not broken. The system is working exactly as it geared and tooled to work. High unemployment keeps wages low. Miserable poverty and homelessness keeps low-wage workers saying “Yes, boss”. Thus, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Homelessness is increasing because poverty, like wealth, is an inheritance.

That means that more and more of us are climbing into that poverty boat or it is inching toward us, and our children and grandchildren, as the cost of living increases and our incomes remain relatively static or disappear.

The fact that the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) base level income for people struggling during the pandemic is more than double the social assistance rates for people struggling before the pandemic, really demonstrates that we punish people for being poor. Our public policy reflects our belief that poverty is a personal failure. We have labelled homelessness as defining the person (as undeserving) rather than a socio-economic and public health crisis that they experience (like a pandemic).

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed system gaps and failures. It also mobilized a system response.

Let us take this rare window of opportunity to challenge our own thinking and drive a social culture that demands a shift to foundational supports that are, now quite obviously, within our collective capacity and reach.

We need to shift from pity to compassion. We must shift from answering questions to questioning ourselves. We must shift from throwing up our hands to making demands of all of our elected officials. Because it’s clear we know what to do. It’s time to do it.

UPwithART – less than two weeks away!

UPwithART – less than two weeks away!

UPwithART 2.0 will be an online, reimagined version of the arty-party and silent art auction you have grown to know and love. Beginning on 24 May and culminating on 30 May, we will all gather online, to celebrate culture, compassion and community through relief of homelessness and for the love of art! This is the 10th annual event, and the second year of Museum London and Unity Project’s partnership to support Unity Project’s Housing Stability Program and Museum London’s children’s programming.

While this year’s arty-party and silent art auction has been digitally adapted to online format, it will still serve up familiar UPwithART favourites: original works by local, renowned, emerging and Unity Project participant artists as well as contemporary and historical works donated by notable London-area collectors. This year’s festivities will include a week-long online art auction, an exclusive Registration Prize, an Art & Activism artist panel discussion, Money Now! donation bidding, live elements and much more!

Our deepest thanks to the sponsors, artists, collectors, committee and all who have rallied to defeat pandemic discombobulation and bring this all together. This milestone anniversary year will prove yet again that Londoners are intent on creating a better city through celebration of the arts and social justice.

Follow Unity Project’s and Museum London’s social media channels to receive UPwithART updates as they happen!
