What’s UP – Summer 2021

What’s UP…  Summer is here!

COVID update…

Government funding to support our operations at the hotel is confirmed until the end of September, where we continue to support individuals at greatest risk during the pandemic.

Unity Project’s Frontline Support Team work incredibly hard and do an amazing job! We currently support 47 individuals in 40 rooms, along with 11 dogs and 9 cats. Since March 2020, 182 unique individuals have been supported in the hotel, including helping 51 individuals to obtain housing.

London Homeless Prevention Network continues to meet monthly in the ongoing process to develop our city’s homeless prevention system. Unity Project is significantly invested in this process and we continue to work to inform and enact better practice for the ongoing relief of homelessness and our role within a robust homeless prevention system.

Another public health crisis…

During this time, people experiencing homelessness are isolated in ways that further put their lives at risk. Overdose deaths have increased exponentially including from opioids as well as stimulants, and the numbers are staggering. In London, 101 individuals have tragically lost their lives. The loss and the grief weighs on participants and frontline workers daily.

The pandemic has taught us that we know how to respond if it is something we prioritize.

We will continue to have gaps despite advances in good programming, as long as we continue to see substance use as a moral or ethical issue. We need to see it as a health issue and address it in a comprehensive way, which means making options available to people as there is no one thing that works for everyone who may be struggling with the substances they use. The development of an overdose prevention site, and system for the safer supply of prescription drugs certainly help during this time, but it is still not broad enough and not enough resources are dedicated to ensure safe supply so that the toxicity of street drugs is not killing people. We know how to do this: We regulate two of the most damaging drugs – alcohol and nicotine – allowing people to use these substances of choice in a safer way.

We need to prioritize this tragedy and respond to it like the health crisis that it is.

Update – Shelley Niro – Thinking of You

Thinking Of You enacts a site of mourning and calls for justice as we continue to learn about Canada’s Indian Residential School System and the impact of genocide on Indigenous peoples and communities as settler colonialism continues to unfold in Canada. Presented outdoors, on screens facing the Deshkan Ziibi/Thames River at the Centre at the Forks, Museum London, these images reference the Medicine Wheel teachings, the interconnectivity between all things—a source of healing, of medicine that is both spiritual and physical. The exhibition has gathered new meaning after the remains of 215 Indigenous children were found in a mass grave at the Kamloops Residential School in British Columbia.

This exhibition will be screened in August between sunset and sunrise.

In constellation with this exhibit, a window display at SATELLiTE Project Space 151 Dundas features Shelley Niro’s poem “HOME” and her T-Shirt “The Wild Ones And The Colonized”. Originally sold (in white) during UPwithART 2021, this new limited-edition T-Shirt in black can be yours for $50 with proceeds benefitting Unity Project and Museum London.

United Way flows $538,026 in COVID-19 relief

United Way flows $538,026 in COVID relief

Unity Project is thrilled to be one of the 13 charities a grant from United Way Elgin Middlesex, in the amount of $27,429. The Government of Canada released $73.9M, the balance of funding for the $350M ECSF, which is being administered locally in collaboration with United Way Centraide Canada, Community Foundations of Canada and the Canadian Red Cross.

On October 5, 2020, United Way Elgin Middlesex launched a second call for applications for the Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF). The fund provides financial support to charities and other qualified beneficiaries adapting their frontline services to support vulnerable Canadians during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recently, United Way was pleased to share that 13 organizations have been approved for a total of $538,026 in grants to support local programs around London, Elgin and Middlesex.

This grant comes at a crucial moment. London is in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and will be for quite some time. Individuals experiencing homelessness are not only at an increased risk of contracting the virus, but are also further marginalized without the resources to ensure their safety and wellness. Unity Project will use this funding to purchase masks, hand sanitizer and personal protective equipment for our participants. This will not only help them keep safe in public life, but also empower them as full citizens of our city, with resources in-hand. This, we hope, will allow them to access and enjoy public spaces, such as restaurants or stores, as well as participate in public life.

We cannot understate just how important this gift is to us. Since moving our main shelter operations to the hotel, we have continually faced new, emerging challenges. Perhaps chief among these challenges is helping our participants with social distancing and adhering to public health policies and recommendations .

Since our doors opened in August 2003, we have been known as London’s littlest shelter and Canada’s largest participatory shelter. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, has significantly affected how we operate. At the hotel,  we increased our typical occupancy, managing rooms, for seniors and those with health conditions which make them most vulnerable to the effects of the virus. Intake has been centralized through the City of London, but Unity Project is still responsible for safeguarding the health and wellness of our participants. We want to see them thrive in their communities and we want to see systems change that will protect individuals experiencing homelessness in poverty.

Thankfully, United Way’s grant will help us realize this goal.
“We are proud to administer the Emergency Community Support Fund locally on behalf of the Government of Canada, alongside the London Community Foundation and their peers in Elgin and Aylmer… This critical investment will ensure rapid relief reaches those who need it most. It’s just one way we’re working together to keep our region strong through an uncertain recovery.”

– Kelly Ziegner, President & CEO, United Way Elgin Middlesex

UPwithART 2020 Results!

UPwithART 2020 Results!

Thanks to you, UPwithART 2.0 raised $146K that will go directly towards Unity Project’s housing stability program and Museum London’s children’s programming! We are (almost) speechless at the fact that even during this difficult time, we ended up only $2K shy of last year’s grand total. This is beyond our dreamiest expectations, and we are all so thankful that you chose to be a part of UPwithART despite the pandemic and our “change in venue”. At first, we were unsure of how our online fundraiser (as we understand, the first large online fundraiser in London since the quarantine took effect) would be received, and as the days progressed, we were overwhelmed by such a strong showing of community support.

This year would not have been possible without the support of our sponsors and community partners, especially our Diamond Sponsor –  Van Simpson Portfolio Management. Please take a moment to look at these organizations that unflinchingly supported us from the starting block to the finish line.

This was also UPwithART’s 10th anniversary and even after a decade, we are committed to improving and adapting our fundraiser. Help us out by taking this short three-minute survey about your experience to make next year’s fundraiser even better.

Lastly, we want to thank you not only for your financial support, but also for the goodwill you’ve put back into the community, your trust in both of our organizations, and your willingness to make London better for future generations and marginalized communities. Stay safe and we hope to see you next year!

-The UPwithART committee
